03.20 [Sermon] Mountain of Salt, City of Light: A Study in the Sermon on the Mount - Part Eight - Many of us have grown up with a secretly held view that much of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) is hopelessly optimistic and needs to be replaced by a more realistic ethic. After all, many say, we are on a suicide mission if we take to heart what Jesus says about loving enemies, turning cheeks, and refusing us the right to judge people who upset us. Or perhaps, maybe, we are intoxicated by a presumption that “the world must be made right by might'' - "violence is necessary." So we have a huge hammer and everything standing in our way resembles the head of a nail, to be swiped at. When children in bomb shelters are dying every day our blood boils. How do we hear what Jesus says and find in these words, the words of life? We can love even (or especially) in a time of war.
